Photographed for the New Jersey Governor's Advisory Committee on the Preservation and Use of Ellis Island.

WELCOME TO ELLIS ISLAND

From 1954 to 1997 Ellis Island was abandoned. During this time weather and vandals took it's toll on the building and facilities.

In 1990 the Great Hall was restored but the most of the island remained fenced off and abandoned.

In 1999 an effort was mounted to save the many neglected building and facilities. These images were captured prior to the first phase; stabilization.
