Incandescent focuses on the warmth and physical presence of electric light. The work considers brightness, heat, glow, and the emotional quality of familiar lighting materials.
These works use simple incandescent sources to create intimate encounters with light, color, shadow, and the human presence inside an illuminated space.
The sound made by the bulbs became one of the most important features of the work. Many participants were drawn to the sound and asked where it was coming from, leading to conversations about pulse-width modulation and the hidden technical behavior inside the light.
Letting people interact with and control light-based artworks is central to James Galvin’s practice.
